Review: Wenger Eiger Boots
Swiss army watch maker Wenger has launched a new line of outdoor gear. The Eiger is a full height boot suited for all your general outdoor adventures. Read more for our full review.
The company behind the famous swiss army knives and Wenger watches has reinvented itself as an outdoor gear company. Along with a wide line of footwear, Wenger now makes tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags. We certainly couldn’t turn down the opportunity to give a pair of their boots a try.
While it’s a little touch, the first thing I noticed was the box the boots came in. Instead of the standard shoe box, they came in a high quality black box that resembled a watch box. Clearly the company has invested a good amount of time in the little details.
The boots themselves have a full leather upper and a rubber rand. The soles feature Wenger’s spydraflex vibration dampening system. According to their PR person, spydraflex helps reduce vibration up your skeleton and thus can help reduce injury. While the boots don’t use Vibram soles, we didn’t find any issues gripping rocks.
Overall, the quality of this boot is pretty decent. Double stitching is used throughout the upper. The rubber is glued in place, and we didn’t have any issues with the glue separating after a few uses like in cheaper boots. The insoles provided with the Eiger are much better padded than cheaper boots, which adds to the comfort.
Perhaps the nicest part of the boot is that there are minimal seams on the inside. This means that there are far fewer places that will rub against your skin and cause blisters. The toe box provided ample space that also helped to reduce blisters.
If I had to find a fault with the Eigers, I would have liked to see thicker laces (although Wenger did provide a spare pair, which was a nice touch), some more padding, and perhaps some different color choices. Overall, the Eiger boots are a very good first showing for the company and I look forward to seeing what they have coming out next.
