Update on Big Meadow Fire in Yosemite

Big Meadow Fire

It’s been a few weeks now since the planned burn in Yosemite National Park went out of control on August 26th. It has since been 100% contained, but the wildfire scorched 7,500 acres in the National Park, requiring over 1,300 personnel and ended up costing $15 million to contain.

Dave Uberuaga, the park’s acting chief, says he takes ‘full responsibility’ for the blaze that closed roads and evacuated park buildings. He has taken heat from area businesses who lost tourist-related business during the blaze. However, he stands behind the use of prescribed bans to lessen wildfire threats.

The National Park Service has dispatched an investigation team to look into what caused the fire to get out of control so quickly. Investigation began today and will continue while the team conducts a review of the fire, the worst the park service has seen since 2000, at Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico.
