For those in the Pacific Northwest, make sure to mark December 11th on your calendars. The American Alpine Institute is celebrating International Mountain Day by holding a benefit for the Index Climbing Fund, organized by the Washington Climbers Coalition. The WCC is hoping to raise $300,000 to save the Lower Town Wall and nearby crags in Index, WA from quarrying. WCC’s ultimate goal is to turn the area into a climbing park and turn it over to the State.
On December 11th, AAI will be offering rock rescue clinics, as well as holding slideshows, raffles, and auctions. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Index Climbing Fund. The two-hour rock rescue clinics will be held at the downtown YMCA climbing wall in Bellingham, WA. In the weeks leading up to the event, AAI will offer pre-registration for the clinics, so check their website for more info.
In addition, on the evening of the 11th, they will host a party at New York Pizza and Bar in Bellingham, where there will be slideshows, raffle items, and an auction. Not only will proceeds from the auction go towards the fund, but also 10% of all food and drink purchased that evening as well.
