Looking for something fun to do this weekend? Celebrate the outdoors by participating in the 7th Annual Great American Backyard Campout tomorrow (Saturday, June 25)! The event, sponsored by the National Wildlife Federation, helps raise funds to establish and support programs that encourage a more active, outdoor lifestyle in children.
According to the NWF, recent studies have shown that “outdoor time helps children grow lean and strong, enhances creativity and attention spans, decreases aggression, and boosts classroom performance.” What’s the take-away here? Getting kids outside helps them be healthier, and in turn, happier! What’s not to like about that?
Whether you’re setting up a tent in your backyard with your kids or heading out into the backcountry for a weekend, everyone is encouraged to join in on the fun. You can register for the event and join a campsite (or create your own) online at www.backyardcampout.org. The NWF has put together tons of tips for making the best of your outdoor experience, from camping to activities to recipes.
From a very young age, my parents instilled a love of the outdoors in me. Camping was a central element to every summer vacation, even if we weren’t traveling very far. Whether it was a trip through the Sierras or just camping in the backyard with friends on summer nights, it was always an adventure! Decades later, the outdoors play an important role in my life, and I’m still camping, though I’ve upgraded gear, and ventured much farther than my own backyard.
