Last month, kayaker Jake Stachovak began an epic 5000-mile journey to paddle around the entire eastern portion of the United States. He began his journey in Portage, Wisconsin, and will follow a route that will allow him to circle back around and finish in Portage as well. He dubbed the adventure the Portage to Portage Paddling Project.

His planned route (beginning in Portage, Wisconsin) is to paddle down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico. From there, he will follow the coastline towards and then around Florida, traveling north along the entire eastern seaboard. After reaching New York City, he will travel up the Hudson and through a series of canals and on to the Great Lakes. He will meet back up with Fox River near Green Bay, Wisconsin for the final leg of the trip that will bring him to his finishing (and starting) point: Portage.
While Jake has hit a few bumps in route (a bad snowstorm in early December put the travel on hold), he is back on track now. You can read more about the project on the official website and follow his progress on his trip blog.
