Outdoor Retailer Recap: Day 2
Outdoor Retailer is now half way over. We’ve covered the show floor a couple hundred times at this point trying to track down the new products for fall 2009 and spring 2010. Here’s a few of the products we’ve run across.
Ultra-light gear manufacturer CAMP is introducing the Cassin brand in to the US. The company is coming out with a couple new belay devices, ice tools, crampons, ice screws, and other assorted mountaineering equipment. The vast majority of the new gear is ultra-light and looks up to CAMP’s standard quality.
Started by a former employee of Smartwool, Goodhew makes a bunch of lifestyle socks from a myriad of yarns. The company tries to design socks that you can use both in the office and on the trail. Standard merino wool is used in many of their socks but they also use bamboo and alpaca in a few of their models. Details like flat toe seems are a welcome addition. No word on pricing, but they’re worth a look.
Mountainsmith has some new photo related products coming out this fall. Some updated backpacks that are made for overnight backpacking with camera gear. Additionally, they make a neat cube for your SLR and a couple spare lenses that you can stash in your regular pack. Their regular backpacks have been revised a bit for the fall, and hopefully we’ll be able to get our hands on a couple of them once they become more readily available.
Osprey continues to innovate with some new packs for the fall and spring. The company has teamed up with Nalgene to make its Manta and Raptor series of packs. These packs feature a Nalgene water bladder that actually has integrated back support in it. This way the bladder becomes part of the structure of the pack. The pack is designed to stop the bladder from deforming the pack. This means the pack will fit much better closer to your body. The Manta is designed for day hiking and will be available in 20, 25, and 30 liter varieties. The Raptor is designed for mountain running and will be available in 6, 10, 14, and 18 liter varieties. Look for this pack to be available in the spring of 2010.
Sierra Designs is coming out with what they claim is the world’s lightest 15 degree sleeping bag. Weighing in at a low 30 ounces (850 grams) it’s a bit lighter than the Marmot Helium (879 grams).
Timex has added a couple additions to its Expedition line of watches. The WS4 watch now has a new strap and a carabiner clip model. A couple new models in their Trail series have also been introduced with a built-in compass. Keep your eyes peeled for a more in depth review of the WS4 here in the future.
Pocket knife maker Wenger is rebranding itself to get closer to its roots as an outdoor brand. To do this, they’re releasing a bunch of new products starting in the Fall. An extensive line of shoes will be released like the Interlaken shown above. We’ll try to get our hands on a couple pairs and give them a try in the next couple months.
