Nine waterways designated to receive restoration projects

This week, as part of World Water Day America’s Great Waters Coalition designated nine waterways across the country as Great Waters. This designation distinguishes the waterways as areas for preservation, and in some cases, restoration. Among the Great Waters are the New York/New Jersey Harbor, the Albemarle Pamlico Sound in North Carolina, and the Colorado River.

The Coalition helps raise awareness about America’s Great Waters, as well as educate people about the challenges facing these waterways and advocate for funding to preserve, protect and restore them.

Theresa Pierno, the co-chair for America’s Great Waters Coalition said in a statement to the press, “We cannot afford not to protect our Great Waters. The health of our Great Waters is directly linked to America’s economic recovery and the creation of jobs. Millions of jobs are dependent on our Great Waters and contribute trillions to our nation’s economy.”

Though the waterways chosen to be distinguished this week vary in size and location, they are all burdened with similar problems, such as pollution, invasive species, and the destruction of habitats, among others.
