New products from Osprey Packs

Osprey Packs, the independent pack maker based in Colorado is best known for their durable, comfortable, and adjustability in pack design. We are big fans of their packs and are impressed with some of the innovations they have presented over the years, whether it be for women’s specific packs, ultralight backpackers, or travel. At Winter Market, Osprey debuted some of their new products, both in new categories and expansion of existing lines.

While Osprey has been making packs for hiking and backpacking for over 35 years now, they have expanded their reach this year with the release of their 24/7 Series, a new line of daypacks designed for the urban environment. The line of six packs in varying sizes all share a few key features and functions, and bring together the outdoors and the workplace. To name a few, all packs will feature:

  • laptop sleeve with padded bottom
  • document sleeve
  • padded carry handle
  • stash pocket and organizer
  • MP3 player pocket with earbud wire passthrough
  • reflective treatment for night visibility
  • waist belt

The different sizes and styles will range in capacity from 730 cu. in., for the Orb model, all the way up to 2100 cu. in. for the Quantum model. The packs are priced competitively for the market ranging from $59 to $99.

The other new products that Osprey was showcasing at Winter Market was their expansion of their travel luggage line. They announced a new style series and also expanded their most popular collection. The Farpoint series is new, and is priced to attract the adventure-minded traveler looking for quality luggage, but with a good value. The Farpoint comes in 2 sizes, the 70-liter (for $199) and the 55-liter (for $179). A few of the features included in the Farpoint series are:

  • top and side carry handles
  • daypack clips on shoulder straps/harness for front-carrying your daypack
  • shoulder straps and waist belt

Osprey also expanded their Porter series, with updated Porter 46 and 65 models. The Porter 46 looks like it’s the ultimate for the world backpacker. At 2800 cu. in., it’s the maximum legal carry-on size, and has some really neat features. Although it doesn’t have rolling wheels, it does feature:

  • a zip out panel with shoulder, sternum, and waist straps
  • multiple carry handles
  • panel zip and slash pocket access to the main compartment
  • structured side panels
  • compression straps

Our favorite feature has to be the zip out panel that hides the backpack straps. It makes the bag easy for carrying around town/airports but with all the straps tucked away, it also gives you the peace of mind knowing that you’ll still be able to carry your pack should you need to gate check it during your journey. The Porter 46 is modestly priced at $99 (the larger Porter 65 has a capacity of 3900 cu. in. and is $129). We’ll be testing the Porter 46 during our trip around the world, so be sure to check back for a review.
