New gear from Sierra Designs for Spring 2011

Sierra Designs has been making quality technical gear since 1965. In the past, their product line-up has been focused on tents, apparel, and sleeping bags, but the big news from SD at Summer Market last week was the launch of a complete line of technical backpacks. Here’s a preview of the new Traverse series of packs from Sierra Designs.

At the core of all the packs is SD’s innovative Fulcrum Suspension system. Comprised of a molded composite framesheet and an aluminum stay, the shape mimics the shape of the human shoulder blades, spine, and hips, providing support over long distances. The base of the system has a custom-forged pivot to provide ease of movement. Though the mid-weight packs do not boast claims of being the lightest pack on the market or have the largest carrying capacity, they are designed with aspects of both in mind, which makes for a pack that can perform in a wide variety of activities.

The Traverse line is available for both men and women, in multiple sizes to provide the best fit possible. The smallest of the line are the Herald (men) and Rejoice (women) daypacks. These 30-liter capacity packs are designed for long day hikes or short overnight backpacking trips. The panel-loading packs are hydration compatible, and provide plenty of room for anything you might need on shorter trips. The packs are available in three sizes, Herald S/M, Herald M/L, and the women’s specific Rejoice. MSRP $159.95.

To round out the Traverse line of packs, SD also introduced their “Pinnacle Series,” a larger capacity pack designed for longer backpacking trips and mountaineering. This includes the Revival 50 and 65 (men) and Jubilee 50 and 65 (women). In addition to the Fulcrum Suspension system, the top-loading packs with additional panel access feature trekking pole holders, dedicated hydration pockets, and a back panel that keeps the pack close to the back for stability, but provides excellent ventilation. There are also two zippered hip pockets on the waist belt and an integrated bottle opener on the shoulder strap.

The women’s specific Jubilee packs have all the same features as the Revival packs, but designed with a woman’s specific frame in mind. The torso is narrower and shorter and the shoulder straps and hip belt are canted to match the shape of a woman’s torso. MSRP $199.95 (Revival & Jubilee 50) to $239.95 (Revival & Jubilee 65).
