This Saturday is National Public Lands Day. Started in 1994 as an opportunity for the public to volunteer, improve, and maintain our public green spaces. Participation in the program has grown from three federal agencies and 700 volunteers to over eight federal agencies, state and local lands, and 120,000 volunteers.
Volunteer projects range anywhere from removing trash and invasive plant species, to planting trees, to building trails and bridges. And not only does it benefit the parks and green spaces by keeping them maintained, it helps build and maintain relationships between the parks and the public.
Each year a few signature sites are chosen–this year, those sites are the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC, Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco, Angeles National Forest in California, and Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site in Atlanta.
You can find sites near you, register to volunteer, and read more about National Public Lands Day on their website.
