Roads that lead to some of Yellowstone National Park’s most popular tourist attractions (Old Faithful and Canyon) will be closing on Monday, November 7th, for the winter season. Though most park services have already ended for the season, the roads are still open for those wanting to get a last glimpse of Old Faithful or the Lower Falls from Artist Point.
The road closure will allow time for park service officials to prepare for the limited, commercially guided snowmobile and snowcoach travel which opens for the winter season on December 15th.
According to the park service release, the only road open throughout the season will be the section from the North Entrance at Gardiner, Montana, through Mammoth Hot Springs, Tower Junction, and the Lamar Valley on to the park’s Northeast Entrance and the communities of Silver Gate and Cooke City, Montana.
Even though the roads are still open for the next few days, it’s recommended that visitors have flexible travel plans and come prepared for changing weather conditions, as temporary changes in road closures can occur at any time. For those visiting during the winter season, keep in mind that mud or snow tires and tire chains may be required during adverse weather conditions.
