It would appear that SIGG isn’t the only water bottle company with a dirty little secret. According to a press release from the President of Laken (Greg Garrigues), the company’s water bottles contained BPA up until August 2008.
In the press release, Garrigues says:
“As a measure to follow through with diligence, Laken tested its bottles once again, but this time to a much higher level of precision. Governing bodies require measurement to Parts Per Million, but Laken chose to test to Parts Per Billion. At this level Laken found that the phenolic epoxy coating showed trace amounts of BPA presence. That being said, if we used the same “blinders on” testing that some of our aluminum bottle competitors have been using we could have claimed that LakenUSA bottles demonstrated no presence of BPA.”
For further demonstration of this, Garrigues links to a slightly redacted copy of their BPA test document here.
While I can’t say that I’m happy by this information recently coming to light, I am a bit happier with Laken than I am with SIGG. To my knowledge, Laken didn’t advertise the bottles containing BPA as 100% BPA free like SIGG has. So while I don’t like that the products contained BPA, they weren’t blatantly lying to the consumers. The company says that it furnished test results to all of its retailers too. So if this is true, it was the responsible thing to do. Along those lines, Laken is also replacing any of their BPA containing bottles with a simple email to Support@LakenUSA.com.
