Review: Kamik SnowpassX

Kamik SnowpassxThe SnowpassX boots from Kamik are insulated full height boots made for days when you expect to encounter some nasty weather.

The SnowpassX are one of the first boots we’ve run into using the new competitor to Gore-Tex, OutDry. Here’s a brief description of the product from our previous article:

“OutDry is a laminate much like the now famous Gore-Tex. What makes OutDry different is that the breathable membrane is directly bonded to the external layer of fabric.  According to the manufacturer, this prevents water from penetrating in to the fabric. The end result is that the fabric is more breathable and keeps you warmer.  As an added bonus, OutDry is manufactured using environmentally friendly, non-toxic materials.”

Now that we’ve had a chance to try out the SnowpassX using OutDry, what do we think? Having purchased a few pairs of Gore-Tex lined shoes in the past, I was expecting much the same. While it’s a bit too early in the season for snow, I tested these boots in water. I was pretty amazed with the results. The boots didn’t seem to get water logged like many of the previous Gore-Tex boots I’ve had and the water beaded off them. The only caveat with the SnowpassX is that you’ll still need gaiters for deep snow as the tongue isn’t fully attached, so there is a place water/snow can get in the boot.

SnowpassX SoleThe Vibram sole Kamik used is a pretty standard material these days. The lug pattern grips rock pretty well and doesn’t seem to have a big problem with mud build-up like other boots I’ve used in the past.

My only real warning with these boots are that they are winter only footwear. Even in September my feet were sweating inside. The insulation will be nice to have when the temperatures drop, but don’t plan on using these in July.

At $150, these are well priced against the competition.
