Sad news was released yesterday that Portland Mountain Rescue has found the remains of a body believed to be that of Anthony Vietti, a Washington resident that went missing in December 2009 while climbing Mt. Hood during a bout of nasty weather and avalanche danger.
According to Nick Watt, the sheriff’s spokesman, positive identification has not been made but a Search and Rescue unit has been dispatched to recover the body later this week when conditions are predicted to be safest. Vietti was part of a three-person team that was reported missing in December. A full-out rescue effort led to finding the body of one of the climbers, but until this week, no trace of the other climbers has been found. The combination of terrible weather conditions and what search teams believe was a nasty fall in a treacherous part of the mountain proved to be fatal for what friends called experienced climbers.
