The big news this week is the partnership between DeLorme and SPOT on DeLorme’s latest Earthmate PN-series GPS. The new PN-60w will be paired with a SPOT communicator; together they will allow someone to send text messages via satellite to friends and family back at home.

The package will contain two devices: the DeLorme GPS, and the SPOT communicator. Text messages can be created on the GPS and then are wirelessly transferred to the SPOT communicator and sent out. Users will even have the option to have their messages sent to update their social networking profiles (Twitter, Facebook, etc.). In addition, the package will also perform the same functions as previous SPOT communicators, like asking for help and sending out SOS/911 alerts.

DeLorme has also taken the opportunity to update their GPS software, improving the user interface and streamlining menus. Battery performance has been improved and a 3.5 gigabyte of internal memory allows for the storage of lots of maps, routes, waypoints, and geocaches.

The official press release will be available at the Consumer Electronics Show being held today-Sunday (January 7-10) in Las Vegas but you can read the write-up about the new DeLorme PN-60w on DeLorme’s blog.
