The snows from this past winter have lingered, with much of the western mountains still covered in snow. At Crater Lake National Park, many popular areas within the park, and even the Rim Road, were not completely accessible until this week. Crews have been working hard to clear the snow on the Rim Road, and now the entire 33-mile loop is completely open.
Many other facilities are now open, including the 16 sites in the Lost Creek Campground. There is still snow on the ground in many places, but it is slowly melting, and the wildflowers are beginning to bloom in places.
Rangers have also now opened a few popular trails, including the Cleetwood Trail down to the lakeshore and part of the trail to Garfield Peak. They are warning visitors that many trails are still covered in snow, as well as downed trees and branches, so be aware of your surroundings and take extra precautions (trekking poles, micro-spikes, etc.) if planning to hike in the park.
The popular boat tours have also started up for the summer season, though construction on the dock is currently underway so visitors will have to travel down a series of very steep stairs. Plan accordingly if that’s on your list for your Crater Lake visit!
