It’s been a few months since authorities apprehended 19-year-old Colton Harris-Moore in the Bahamas, after his two-year crime spree. Most know him as the “Barefoot Bandit” for his signature–leaving bare footprints at the scene of his crimes.
Over the past two years, Harris-Moore has been on the run, breaking into and hiding out in vacation homes, stealing cars, boats, and planes, on the way. His crime spree ended in July, and now a federal grand jury has indicted him on a laundry list of crimes. According to the Seattle Times, he was charged with interstate transportation of a stolen aircraft, interstate and foreign transportation of a stolen firearm, being a fugitive in possession of a firearm, piloting an aircraft without a valid airman’s certificate, and interstate transportation of a stolen vessel. His arraignment is scheduled for next Thursday, November 18.
Some of the charges are punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Others, like piloting an aircraft without an airman’s certificate carries up to a 3 year prison sentence. On top of the federal charges released yesterday, Harris-Moore also faces charges in Island and San Juan counties here in Washington State.
Though he is considered a folk hero by some, it is highly unlikely for him to receive sympathy from the judge for his crimes. According to Harris-Moore’s attorney, he does not consider himself a hero.
