If you’re looking for all the features of a burly trail running shoe but without the weight, check out the ProGrid Xodus from Saucony. Read more for our full review.
The ProGrid Xodus from Saucony is definitely a serious trail running shoe–with the features to prove it. Everything from the Vibram Trek outsole (designed for maximum traction and durability) to the Arch-Lock technology (to keep your foot in place for better stability) is designed to provide the best cushioning and stability while keeping weight down. Weighing in just a hair over 11 ounces, they are definitely lighter than other trail runners I have worn in the past.
On the trail, they perform just as trail runners should–keeping you moving forward and stable on uneven and unexpected trail surfaces. During testing, I found the ProGrid Xodus to also work well for casual light hikes when even a light hiker seems a bit too burly. The ProGrid Xodus does have a very low profile, and the absence of a Gore-Tex membrane or proprietary water-proofing technology makes slogging through wet (and often muddy) trails not so fun. (For this kind of terrain, Saucony offers the ProGrid Razor, a neoprene bootie style trail runner with the Xodus as a base.) This did not present a problem for me, as I just picked my trails carefully and avoided running through huge puddles in the middle of a trail. The ride is smooth and cushioning is just enough to provide comfort without being excessive.
Overall, the ProGrid Xodus exceeded my expectations in terms of weight-saving and comfort. They retail for $100 and are available for both men and women.
