If you are planning any hikes in the New York/New Jersey area and looking for maps, we definitely recommend checking out the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference (NYNJTC) trail maps. Before we moved to the West Coast, we did a lot of hiking in the New York Hudson Highlands and always carried these maps with us.
NYNJTC has been creating, protecting, and maintaining trails in the New York/New Jersey area since 1920. A non-profit, volunteer-driven organization dedicated to protecting hiking trails through advocacy and support, as well as educating the public, the Trail Conference provides a lot more than just great maps. Volunteer opportunities and benefits from membership are just a few to mention.
You won’t be surprised to find that NYNJTC maps are award winning. The five-color maps are printed on Tyvek, which provides excellent durability and water resistance—great features for use on the trail. With extensive trail information, and at least 100-foot contour lines, these maps are accurate and easy to read. Some maps even provide trail information for horses and mountain bikes, though some of our favorite features were the markers for viewpoints and historical sites like mines and old foundations.
Currently, they have eleven map sets to choose from. Each map is small enough to manage easily on the trail, and a good value. The most expensive, five-map set will only run you $14.95. You can purchase the maps directly from the Trail Conference on their website.
