Review: Kahtoola MICROspikes

A few years ago, Kahtoola introduced the MICROspikes, a lightweight traction device that can be worn over any style of sneaker or boot. Since then, there have been quite a few other manufacturers to jump on the bandwagon. And although it may be the middle of June, we still managed to find a trail to test a few pairs.

A lackluster winter prevented earlier testing, but as we train for Mt. Rainier, there are a few still a few peaks with snow cover, making a perfect opportunity to test the MICROspikes. Ranging in weight from 11.4 ounces (for the small) to 15.6 ounces (for the extra large), they don’t add a significant amount of weight to your pack and don’t take up much room, either.

Comprised of a stainless steel chain link system (with 3/8-inch spikes interspersed to provide traction) and flexible elastomer, they conform to just about any shoe or boot you put them on. The elastomer stretches and molds to the shoes, making them easy to put on and remove and a front toe bar stabilizes the chains on your shoe.

In the field, these performed well, making a direct ascent through soft, melting snow much easier. Though the situation might be different with other types of snow, we didn’t have problems with snow accumulating in the traction part of the MICROspikes.

I would definitely recommend these to anyone who regularly hikes on trails that still have snowpack late in the season. Because special shoes aren’t required and they don’t take up a considerable amount of space and weight, they are easy to toss in your pack with the rest of your gear and food. My only word of advice? If given the choice between two colors, red and black, choose the red! While descending quickly through some deeper melting snow, I failed to notice one of the MICROspikes had slid off my boot in a posthole, causing a short trip back up to find and recover it. Had they been the easy-to-spot red, I’m sure I would have noticed its absence much sooner.

The Kahtoola MICROspikes retail for $59 and are available in two colors (red or black) and sizes Small-Extra Large.
