Review: Icebreaker GT 200 Baselayer

Looking for a high-performance baselayer that will keep you warm and dry even during high-intensity outdoor pursuits? You might want to check out Icebreaker’s GT line of baselayers. Read more for the full review.

Icebreaker is well-known for their high-quality merino wool baselayers and apparel. However, in recent years they have expanded their line of baselayers to include merino wool/synthetic blend fabrics, which utilize the beneficial properties of both materials. Merino wool provides excellent odor control and synthetic fabrics wick moisture away and dry quickly.  Icebreaker’s GT line utilizes this blended fabric and breaks it down into four weights: 150 (ultralite), 200 (lightweight), 260 (midweight), and 320 (expedition weight). We tested the GT 200 baselayer in the L/S Chase Zip style for women, though this baselayer fabric is available in multiple styles for both men and women.

The GT 200 weight is a great all-around baselayer, perfectly suited for anything from trail running to snow sports. During tests in varying conditions (temperatures ranging anywhere from low 30s to mid 50s), the GT 200 wicked away sweat, keeping me dry and warm. Constructing the top using different fabric weaves and weights in specific zones contributes quite a bit to the overall performance and versatility of the piece.

It’s pretty apparent that Icebreaker puts a lot of thought into the design of the apparel. Flatlock seams help to prevent bulk and chafing, a deep zip helps to regulate your temperature on warmer days, integrated reflectivity along the zipper and in the graphics, and my personal favorite, thumb holes to keep your sleeves in place under multiple layers.

The only drawback that we could find with the Icebreaker GT 200 is that it requires a level of commitment to caring for following the manufacturers instructions. Like most wool products, you can’t just toss it in the wash with the rest of your clothes. Using a wool-specific soap like Woolite (or our favorite, NikWax Wool Wash), and air-drying will reduce the amount of wear and tear on the fabric (it will be getting enough of that on the trail)–however, it’s always safe to check the label for specific care instructions.

The pricetag might be a little steep for some–the women’s GT 200 L/S Chase Zip style that we tested retails for $100, though, it should be noted it is not anymore expensive than similar merino wool products from other manufacturers. However, Icebreaker is committed to manufacturing high-quality apparel using sustainable and environmentally friendly practices–you can even trace your individual garment back to the station in New Zealand where the wool was grown, using what they call their ‘BaaCode.’ Overall, we thought this was a versatile baselayer that performed well and is worth the pricetag.
