A few weeks ago we wrote about a cool product we found: the aLOKSAK waterproof bag. While it is essentially a heavy duty zip top bag that is watertight, after seeing them in person, it’s very clear the aLOKSAK is well constructed and very watertight. We tested it with one of our cell phones and after being completely submerged for five minutes, the phone still worked, and there wasn’t a drop of moisture in the bag. Certified waterproof up to 200 feet, and tested and approved by the Navy Experimental Diving Unit, this came as no surprise.
The most important feature of the aLOKSAK is the zipper seal—each bag is printed with directions on how to use it. This seems silly at first, but if you don’t seal it properly, it won’t keep the valuable items contained within protected from the elements. However, it’s important to test each bag before you use it in the field; seal the bag with some air in it, and submerge it fully under still water. If air bubbles appear, you have a leaky bag, and it should be replaced. We tested all three of the bags in the package and they did not have any leaks.
During our testing process, one thing we noticed was that if the aLOKSAK only contained a few lightweight items, like a small map, ID, or other similar items, it would float on the surface of the water. While the directions instruct to remove most of the air before sealing, it’s very difficult, and it was nice to know that if light enough, the bag would float. However, anything heavier, like keys, or a cell phone, would cause it to sink.
While we don’t plan on diving with the aLOKSAK, we will use these in the future for containing cell phones or electronic car remote keys while on the trail. The added security provided makes it well worth the $5.99 price tag for a package of three watertight bags.
