Review: Manzella Versatile Gloves

Ultra warm soft shell gloves? According to Manzella, that’s not a mistype. Read more for our review of the Manzella Versatile gloves.

Most everything with the soft shell moniker tends to be good only for milder weather. I was somewhat intrigued by the Versatile gloves in that they’re supposed to be super warm soft shell gloves. They use Gore Windstopper Soft-Shell fabric, so they’re supposed to be very breathable, windproof gloves.

The day I happened to try the Versatile gloves was just below freezing. While working up a sweat skiing, I found out that this is a bit too warm for these gloves. To say they were warm was an understatement. That said, they did breathe fairly well. In my mind, these gloves would work very well around 20 degrees.

If you’re considering buying these gloves, keep in mind that they are not completely waterproof. While they don’t soak up the water, they’re not going to shed it like Gore-Tex or OutDry. The upside to this is that the gloves offer quite a bit more dexterity than your average glove. It’s a lot easier to feel what you’re doing when you don’t have a crinkly Gore-Tex fabric between you and your ski poles.

The Manzella Versatile gloves retail for around $40. This prices them significantly below the average glove from other stalwarts in the outdoor industry. While the Versatile gloves don’t have as many features as a $150 pair of gloves, not everyone needs or wants a $150 pair of gloves. In my mind, this is where these gloves really shine. They’re a pretty good value if you’re looking for some gloves for the occasional winter resort skiing or for shoveling the driveway.
