Upcoming events in the Pacific Northwest

For our readers in the Pacific Northwest, here are a few upcoming events this month worth checking out.

NPS holding information sessions on the proposed Denali climbing fee increase

A few months ago, the NPS announced that they are proposing a fee increase for those that climb Mt. Rainier and Mt. McKinley. Currently at $30 and $200, respectively, the Park Service is proposing to increase those fees to $50 and $500. The sharp increase (in regards to Mt. McKinley) came as a shock to many. As part of the public involvement process, Denali National Park officials are holding information sessions for the public over the course of the next two months.

BP relinquishes oil and gas land leases near Glacier National Park

Last week, two United States Senators from Montana announced that BP will be giving up its holdings near Glacier National Park. The land was leased for oil and natural gas exploration and totals over 1,800 acres steps away from the West entrance to the park.

Glacier National Park making improvements to facilities and trails

Glacier National Park, with help from the Glacier National Park Fund, is making improvements to trails and facilities throughout the park. The money is from both donations to the fund and revenue from the sale of Glacier NP specialty license plates in Montana.

Man wanted in shooting of Utah park ranger

Utah State Parks Ranger Brody Young is in critical condition after he was shot three times while performing regular patrols around the Poison Spider Mesa Trail area. He stopped a vehicle at the trailhead on Friday evening and shots were fired by both parties.

“Barefoot Bandit” pleads not guilty to five federal charges

On Thursday in Seattle, Colton Harris-Moore (the famous “Barefoot Bandit” that has been all over the news lately) pled “not guilty” to five federal charges. One of the charges Harris-Moore is facing: stealing and piloting an aircraft without a valid airman’s certificate.

Search for elderly hiker goes into its fifth day

In western NY state, rescue teams are searching for a 92-year-old man who has been lost while hiking for five nights. The man, Thomas Hamilton, and his 66-year-old daughter, Rebecca Huffman went for a hike in Allegany State Park last week.
