Cool resource: Chimani Yosemite app

Though not everyone may agree that technology and the outdoors belong together, it does have its benefits (like sharing topo maps and elevation charts in our Trail Reports). NPS seeks to extend Jackson Hole Airport agreement

Jackson Hole Airport has a unique location, lying within the boundaries of Grand Teton National Park. An agreement with the National Park Service allows the airport to function, but in a few years, if the agreement is not extended, the airport could lose federal funding.

Mt. Rainier NP acquires additional land to improve park access

This week, Mt. Rainier National Park, with help from the Trust for Public Land, acquired an additional 440 acres along Carbon River Road, an access point that is frequently washed out. With this land acquisition, the park service will be able to move facilities and parking areas to provide better access to the park at that point.

Alaska’s old-growth forests being threatened

Though there are still a large amount of forests across the country, it’s estimated that only 3% are old-growth forests. The few remaining forests of that kind are mostly in Alaska. Tongass National Forest has about 17 million acres of old-growth, but it may not stay that way for very much longer.

Proposed expansion to North Cascades National Park in the works

[NPCA logo] The NPCA is always working on projects to keep our national parks beautiful and around for generations to come. They also help identify ways that national parks can expand their borders. Currently, they are working hard to get a proposal that would expand the North Cascades National Park included in the Ross Lake General Management Plan.

Car rolls over edge into Crater Lake near North Junction Scenic Overlook

Parts of a 2003 Volkswagen Passat are now part of the Crater Lake ecosystem after an accident last week near the North Junction Scenic Overlook. A couple from Ashland, Oregon were sightseeing with their dog in tow when they stopped at a scenic overlook to enjoy the views.

Yosemite holds annual “Facelift” event next week

September 22-26 marks the seventh annual Facelift event in Yosemite National Park. The event is a multi-day, park-wide clean-up program sponsored by the Yosemite Climbing Association and made possible by the many volunteers that participate.
