SPOT 2 Messenger emergency beacon recalled

The SPOT emergency beacons have become quite popular lately because people are looking for alternative methods to alert authorities or emergency responders while in the backcountry (and most likely out of cell phone range). However, yesterday (December 14th) the company issued a voluntary recall of their SPOT 2 Messenger unit.

America’s Great Waters Coalition

Battle to keep Asian Carp out of Lake Michigan

Controversy over Ski Magazine article

If you have been following ski-related news, you may have heard about the tragic death of a 14-year-old girl skiing at Breckenridge. Ski Magazine wrote about the event and offered condolences to the girl’s family and friends. However, the article has since mysteriously disappeared.

Save the Date: Bozeman Ice Festival Dec 10-13

If you’ll be near Bozeman, Montana next weekend, the Bozeman Ice Festival will be held next Thursday through Sunday (December 10th-13th). The event, presented by Arc’teryx, will have gear demos, slide shows, ice climbing clinics (including women-specific clinics).

NPS awarded Connect Trails to Parks grants for 2010 FY

In more great news for the National Park Service, they were awarded almost $900,000 in grant funds for the 2010 fiscal year. With these funds, the NPS will be able to move forward on different projects in 17 parks and forests across the country.
